Kristal Bayron Nieves

By: Marlene Gomez-Abundiz January 12, 2022

Kristal Bayron Nieves like many inspired teens was a young woman full of hopes and dreams who had every intention of achieving them when she arrived in New York with her mother and brother 2 years ago from Puerto Rico. She wanted to obtain a degree in nursing and buy a car. When she started working at Burger King in East Harlem she was hoping to save up to make her dreams reality and help her mother. Those hopes for the American dream ended for Kristal when she was savagely shot down while working.

On January 9,2022 the young woman was working her shift as a cashier at Burger King when an unknown assailant walked in about 12:45am attemping to rob the restaurant. The assailant attacked a customer before also attacking the manager knocking her to the ground and robbing her of her phone. He then turned to Bayron Nieves demanding she give him cash and even when she did he shot her in the torso and ran out. Kristal expressed fear for her safety days prior to the fatal shooting and was scheduled to begin early hours the following week.

A former Burger King employee Winston Glynn was arrested in Brooklyn after video footage retrieved from the area and social media videos placed him in connection with the murder. He is currently being held without bail.

Miss Bayron Nieve's funeral was held on January 18 in East Harlem and her body was transported via JetBlue to her native Puerto Rico for burial.

Marlene's clarity:

I would like to first extend my deepest condolences to Kristal Bayron-Nieves. No parent should ever have to bury their child. There is no guilt to be felt for something that is out of our control. All we can do is honor her memory brightly. Kristal's murder was preventable and the Burger King on 116th was negligent. Evening shifts should have been reduced given that the area had a heavy crime presence at late night hours and still does. Kristal's family would be within their right to file a lawsuit on behalf of Kristal.
